"ReplayTV customers represented by the EFF have filed a lawsuit against the entertainment industry to protect their rights to skip over commercials and record television programs for later viewing using digital video recorders. "

Yeah, and I just love this article detailing some of the verbal jabs TiVo and SonicBlue execs have been taking at each other. Now children, fight nicely.

Interesting about the little 30 second skip issue. It's in TiVo and it's no major hack, while watching a pre-recorded program you press select-play-select-3-0-select and you have changed the function of the skip to index (15 min mark I think) to skip 30 seconds. This is on DirecTiVos only AFAIK
Kinda weird how they (TiVo) made the statement "That's why the company decided not to include a "skip" button in TiVo, as Replay did. Skipping ahead, over the ads without even having to see them, would have alienated the media companies, Baer said. And it would have been unnecessary." and then give you a way to do what's "unnecessary."

The thing that bothers me is that it seems the point of the article is saying that DVR are commercial skipping tools. While that's a great feature, it's not why I bought my TiVo and it''s not what I use it for. Sometimes I will watch a recorded program commercials and all.

It works on StandAlone TiVos too, and in 3.0 you can still use it as a skip-to-tick button while rewinding/fast-forwarding.

And they won no less. Completely amazing. Glad to see that all my money that goes to the EFF isn't being wasted after all.

It works on more than just the 3.0 TiVo's. This site has an easy to read layout of what works on what version.

This even has patches to the binary to turn on hacks after a reboot.

This thread should be locked.

It is discussing a product that blatently violates copyright law. With this product you are able to trade copywrited material, ie. tv shows, movies, sporting events, ect., with other users via the internet. As safety and longevity of this forum is first priority, we must "avoid even the appearance of sin"!

I know it works on more than 3.0.. what I was saying is that starting with 3.0, enabling 30-sec skip also allowed you to use the normal skip-to-tick functionality of the ->| button when you're fast-forwarding

Who said anything about trading copywrited material? It's completely legal to own a TiVo, just as it is legal to create MP3s from legitimately owned CDs for personal listening pleasure.

By the way, do you own a VCR?

If they won, how can it be illegal? . You were pimping some shady peer-to-peer stuff. I've not seen anyone promoting a product here.

Sour grapes? I think so.

Downloading mp3's isn't illegal either, but there was a thread locked for discussing it..
